HON 3380 - Global Travel Study: Short Term Research Abroad (STRA) 3 Credit Hour(s)
This course builds upon the foundational knowledge gained in HON 2201 : Global Scholars Honors Colloquia, where students complete all preliminary research and planning, including in-depth cultural orientation and discipline-specific introductions. In this course, students from various majors engage in a travel abroad experience that is also tailored to their fields of study. The groundwork done in HON 2201 prepares students for immersive field projects abroad that promote “meaningful discovery ” in their respective disciplines. Examples include visiting local schools to observe educational practices, meeting scientists at international research stations, engaging with global businesses on market expansion strategies, volunteering with healthcare organizations on public health initiatives, uncovering cultural heritage through museum visits or analyzing local media and participating in theater, art or music festivals. This course offers opportunities to foster interactions with business, government, and civil society leaders. Throughout the travel experience, students engage in daily reflections and interdisciplinary collaborations, sharing knowledge across majors. The course culminates in a student learning journal, a reflection paper, and a final integration session, helping to incorporate global experiences into their future thesis or capstone projects. By blending cultural immersion with academic rigor, the course enhances global proficiency and fosters “meaningful discovery” that prepares students for advanced research and professional development.
