College of Health Sciences



The College of Health Sciences was formed in 1994 in order to provide quality education for professional practice in a variety of areas associated with health and human services. The college aspires to the highest standards of educational excellence, blending a professional perspective with a liberal arts and science foundation.

Within the College of Health Sciences are the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work and Human Services, and the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion.

The college is committed to meeting the challenges of the next decade; hence, it emphasizes quality teaching and values scholarly activity. The college is committed to the development of its students into knowledgeable, caring, responsive and self-directed individuals able to meet the health and human caring needs of a diverse and complex society through change, advocacy and leadership within their communities.

As part of ongoing planning and evaluation, the College of Health Sciences regularly evaluates student learning outcomes for each degree program.

School of Social Work and Human Services

Case Management Minor

A minor in Case Management is offered to students who desire a basic understanding of the process and foundational skill sets necessary to provide case management services in a variety of settings.

Human Services Major

The purpose of the human services major is twofold: (1) to prepare the graduate for entry level positions in a myriad of human services delivery systems where specialized training is not required, and (2) to prepare students for graduate education. The curriculum is designed to provide the student with an understanding of human behavior within the context of the social environment, an understanding of social and human service delivery systems, and basic skills in effective communication with client systems and basic skills in the development of intervention strategies to resolve interpersonal and social problems. A 240-clock-hour practicum is required.

Human Services Minor

A minor in human services is offered to students who desire basic understanding of the human services delivery system.

Social Work Major

The social work program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Accreditation and program graduates are eligible to sit for social work licensure examination. Social work licensure is required in the state of Alabama for those in the practice of social work. The principle educational objective of the social work program is the preparation of graduates for beginning level generalist social work practice. The curriculum is designed to provide the beginning-level practitioner an ability to apply an eclectic knowledge base guided by professional values; to use a wide range of intervention skills to target any-sized client system (micro to macro levels) while employing a planned change process directed toward client empowerment; to work effectively, under supervision, within social service delivery organizational structures while employing a wide range professional roles. A practicum is required, with a minimum of 400 clock hours.

Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion

One of the oldest departments on campus, The Department Kinesiology and Health Promotion consists of five undergraduate degree options and boasts more than 1,000 majors in the department. These degree options include Coaching, Exercise Physiology, Interprofessional Health Sciences, Nutrition, and Physical Education.

Coaching

Do you have a passion for helping student-athletes reach their full potential while coaching the sport you love? With Troy University’s Bachelor of Science in Sport Coaching, you can prepare for a career of coaching student athletes at a variety of levels, making a lasting impact on future generations. Troy’s Sport Coaching bachelor’s degree is offered on the Troy campus blended format and 100% online to allow for the ultimate flexibility for students wishing to be employed full-time while completing this degree.

This curriculum will train you to make a difference in the lives of student athletes while furthering your knowledge in nutrition, leadership, psychology, health, fitness, weight training, wellness, ethics, statistics, specific sports coaching fields, and sports officiating. This NCACE accredited program will lead to National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Interscholastic Coaching Certifications. With the strong curriculum and certifications, students are fully prepared to immediately enter the coaching field or pursue a graduate degree in coaching and related fields. Whether your goal is to obtain a career in professional sports, collegiate sports, K-12 private school, recreational sports, or within a club sports setting, this degree fully prepares you for all avenues. Upon completion of this degree, those wishing to further their education will also be prepared to begin Troy University’s Master of Science-Kinesiology - Coaching program.

Exercise Physiology

If a career in physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical exercise testing and prescription, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, health-fitness/wellness, strength and conditioning or nutrition is in your future, a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology is a perfect fit. This competitive program includes concentrations in pre-health professions, health and wellness, or nutrition, and incorporates coursework from five academic departments spread across two colleges.

With an emphasis on preparation for entry into graduate health profession schools in the fields of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and physician assistant, you will be prepared to successfully enter into graduate health profession schools nationwide. Upon completion of the program, you will also be prepared to sit for certification examinations offered through the American College of Sports Medicine, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and other organizations in the related fields of health and fitness, clinical exercise testing, and strength and conditioning.

Interprofessional Health Science

Troy University’s Bachelor of Science in Interprofessional Health Sciences (IPHS) degree is for students who have a passion for helping people. The IPHS program, which is offered in class, online and blended, is a customizable degree designed for students who want to pursue a career in healthcare or a healthcare-related field such as fitness or wellness. the IPHS degree from TROY consists of core classes and the selection of three minors that gives the opportunity for hands-on experience, collaboration, research and interaction with a variety of individuals and groups to prepare them for career fields or jobs such as case management, health promotion, hospital administrator, medical/pharmaceutical sales, crisis intervention, health and wellness coach, etc.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 13% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations. This increase is expected to result in about 2 million new jobs over the decade.

The IPHS degree from TROY provides a customizable program that allows students to focus on the career path of their choosing to fulfill their goal of helping others.

Nutrition

If you have an interest in food and health and are eager to dive into a career helping others with their nutrition goals, TROY’s Bachelor of Science in Nutrition may be the right path for you. Whether you desire to prepare for a graduate program in dietetics to become a Registered Dietitian, or go straight into your career, this degree prepares you for a rewarding future in nutrition. Students have a choice of Troy Campus-blended delivery or taking this degree 100% Online, allowing for maximum flexibility. If the program sequence is followed, including taking classes in the summer, a student could complete this degree in three years, then apply to a graduate program for dietetics, which is typically a two-year program. This meaning, from day one in TROY’s Bachelor of Science in Nutrition program to completion of a master’s in dietetics and the Registered Dietitian exam, you could be a Registered Dietitian in five years. All courses provide students the opportunity to interact with nutrition experts, including guest lecturers and virtual presentations for online students. Each course utilizes a variety of learning opportunities, including hands-on experiences in food service operations, lectures on the fundamentals of assessing community health needs, design and facilitating of a community nutrition project and completing nutrition assessment labs and nutrition therapy case studies. Students will also be able to obtain their Serv-Safe certification and complete an internship class in which they can gain extensive experience in clinical, sport or public health nutrition and food service.

Similar to academic preparation for Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists, the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition prepares you to apply to graduate schools in order to become eligible to sit for the national credentialing exam for Registered Dietitians and Nutritionists.

However, you do not have to obtain another degree to start your career in nutrition. TROY’s Bachelor of Science in Nutrition prepares you to take the Certified Dietary Manager’s exam and work as a food service director within the corporate world or in medical facilities. Additionally, students are fully equipped for a career as a food safety auditor, corporate wellness coordinator, health educator, nutrition educator, community health worker or public health nutritionist. The demand for Registered Dietitians and Certified Dietary Managers is high and is expected to continue to grow at a more rapid pace in the next ten years. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the job outlook for all foodservice managers is extremely positive, with about 39,600 openings projected each year, on average, through 2032.

Physical Education

If you are passionate about teaching others skills necessary to participate in sport and physical activity for life, the Bachelor of Science in Physical Education (Teaching Certification) at Troy is for you. This program prepares preschool - 12th grade teachers to impact students in team, individual, and lifetime sport skills in beyond school years. At Troy University our physical education program is based on three beliefs, (1) teach students the proper skills necessary to participate in a variety of sport, individual, and lifetime activities, (2) provide opportunities for students to learn and participate in a wide variety of sport, individual and lifetime activities, (3) by doing so students become engage in lifetime physical activities that promote a healthy active lifestyle.

School of Nursing

The School of Nursing programs are designed to develop expertise necessary for the practice of nursing in a complex, changing health care system. Faculty are well qualified.

Students are accepted for admission to the ASN (Montgomery Campus) and BSN (Troy and Dothan Campus) programs in the spring and fall semesters. The ASN degree may be completed in five semesters. The BSN degree may be completed in nine semesters. Registered nurses are eligible for advanced placement in the online RN Mobility track of the BSN Program. For information related to progression from RN Mobility track to the Family Nurse Practitioner or Healthcare Informatics and Nursing Leadership tracks in the MSN Program or the DNP program, consult the Graduate Catalog. Admission to the School of Nursing is selective, based on established criteria for each program.

All students must maintain current CPR certification, annual proof of TB testing, and proof of annual physical examination when enrolled in clinical nursing courses. Students are responsible for their own medical care if needed in the clinical setting and must have health insurance. Students should abide by Centers for Disease Control, HIPAA, and OSHA guidelines. Students must present titer reports for Hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella zoster. Drug screening and criminal background information are required before students may attend clinical course practicums. Students may have additional requirements based on specific facility policies. Standardized achievement tests are required at various points in the undergraduate programs of learning.

Students in the School of Nursing must comply with legal, moral and legislative standards in accordance with the Alabama Board of Nursing Administrative Code. A student may be denied permission to write the licensing examination to become a registered nurse (RN) if he/she has been convicted of a felony.

Challenge examinations are available for various courses for students who meet the eligibility criteria. No nursing course may be audited before it is taken for credit.

Many nursing courses have additional fees. These fees are printed in the schedule of classes.

Admission is competitive. All students who meet minimum requirements may not be admitted.
