Master of Arts in Arts Administration

Students should consult the General Regulations section of the Graduate Catalog for additional information regarding Graduate School admission requirements, transfer credit, and other critical policies and procedures.


The Master of Arts in Arts Administration degree serves the needs of those aspiring to serve as leaders in non-profit arts organizations such as theatres, galleries, performing arts centers, museums, arts councils, or similar entities. This 36 credit hour program includes coursework in fundraising, grant writing, and leadership, and culminates in an internship with an active non-profit arts organization. Entering students should hold a bachelor’s degree in a fine arts, performing arts, or a humanities discipline upon matriculation into the program.

Prerequisite Requirements


A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is a requirement for admission into the program. Entering students should hold a bachelor’s degree in a fine arts, performing arts, or a humanities discipline upon matriculation into the program.

Admission Requirements


Documents required for application:

  • Letter of Recommendation
  • Transcripts

To apply for admission to the Master of Arts in Arts Administration program, applicants must submit the following:

  1. Completed Application for Admission to the Graduate School;
  2. Official transcript(s); AND
  3. A letter of recommendation that addresses the applicant’s potential for success in the Master of Arts in Arts Administration graduate program.

Unconditional Admission


Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 (4.0 scale) or a 3.0 grade point average on the last 30 semester hours. All hours attempted in the term in which the 30 semester hours were reached will be used to calculate the grade point average.

Conditional Admission


Applicants with an overall undergraduate grade point average less than 2.5 (4.0 scale) may be granted conditional admission at the discretion of the MA in Arts Administration coordinator with approval of the Academic Dean. Conditionally admitted students must earn a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in the first semester of study to be granted unconditional admission.

Temporary Admission


Temporary Admission may be granted to applicants who have not submitted the letter of recommendation or official undergraduate transcript. Temporary admission is only for one semester or term and must follow the requirements outlined under Conditional Admission.

Transfer Credit


A maximum of 6 semester hours taken at another regionally accredited college or university, with a grade of “B” or better, can be applied toward the degree. These courses must be comparable to Troy University’s courses and must be approved by the MA in Arts Administration’s graduate faculty.

Degree Requirements


Successful completion of the courses listed below with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better and successful completion of the internship is necessary to fulfill requirements for the degree. If a student makes a “D” or “F” in a core course, the course must be retaken. If the student earns a “D” or “F” in an elective course, the course may be retaken, or another elective course taken in its place. A “B” or better must be earned in the research course, PA 6601 , and the internship course, PA 6694 .

Choose any six graduate credits in a fine arts, performing arts, humanities, or communication field with the following prefixes: ART, COM, DRA, ENG, JRN, MUI, or MUS.
