Master of Science in Sport Management

Students should consult the General Regulations section of the Graduate Catalog for additional information regarding Graduate School admission requirements, transfer credit, and other critical policies and procedures.


The Sport Management graduate program is designed to provide the graduate with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage in the practice of management in a variety of settings. The goals and objectives of the program are guided by, but are not limited to, the criteria and guidelines set forth by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).

 

Expected Program Outcomes:


The program aims to provide a broad-based, comprehensive curriculum, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration that prepares a sport management practitioner to:

  1. plan, develop, implement and evaluate programs of service designed to meet local community, state, regional, national and international needs;
  2. administer and manage a sport management service;
  3. articulate and apply sport management principles, intervention approaches, rationales, and expected outcomes of service;
  4. be innovators and leaders in the profession, applying sport management knowledge to the solution of complex sport managerial issues and health problems;
  5. demonstrate an attitude of inquiry and nurture the capacity for creative thinking, critical analysis and problem solving; to interpret and apply related research results to sport management practice.

Expected Student Outcomes:


Upon successful completion of the SM program, the student will be able to:

  1. articulate core curricular knowledge;
  2. cultivate an advanced understanding of ethical obligations in sport management roles;
  3. critically evaluate sport related research;
  4. articulate their professional preparedness; and,
  5. be prepared for a career in the sport management industry.

Prerequisite Requirements


Candidates for admission must hold a baccalaureate degree in sport management or related field.

Admission Requirements for the Master of Science in Sport Management


Unconditional Admission


  1. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited four-year institution. Students with a baccalaureate degree from an unaccredited or otherwise accredited institution should see Unaccredited or Otherwise Accredited Student Admission.
  2. Applicants must have an overall grade point average of 2.5 on a four-point scale or a 3.0 grade point average on the last 30 semester hours. All hours attempted in the term in which the 30 semester hours were reached will be used to calculate the grade point average.

Conditional Admission


Conditional Admission does not apply to this program.

Transfer Credit


A maximum of 12 semester hours taken at another regionally accredited institution of higher learning, with a grade of “B” or better, can be applied toward the degree. These courses must be comparable to Troy University’s courses and must be approved by the SM graduate faculty.

Degree Requirements


Successful completion of the courses listed below with an overall grade point average of 3.0 or better and successful completion of the exit capstone requirement is necessary to fulfill requirements for the degree. If a student makes a “D” or “F” in a core or concentration course, the course must be retaken. If the student earns a “D” or “F” in an elective course, the course may be retaken, or another elective taken in its place. The student can satisfy the research component requirement by successfully completing SM 6617  with a grade of “B” or better.

Exit Capstone Requirement


Each M.S. Sport Management student is expected to submit their exit capstone project 6 weeks prior to their anticipated graduation date. Exit capstone projects will be submitted to the TROY M.S. Sport Management Graduate Coordinator via email. Email subject lines should read: LAST NAME, MSSM Exit Capstone Requirement.

Additional information pertaining to the Exit Capstone Requirement:

  1. The exit capstone requirement is a digital professional portfolio containing:
    1. Current Resume or Curriculum Vita (CV);

      1. a QR code or link to an expanded digital portfolio should be provided in the resume or CV.

    2. Students should demonstrate their professional readiness through a creative, digital portfolio. The portfolio should minimally include highlights on: Education, Professional Experiences, Other Notable Experiences, Personal/Professional Qualifications and/or Examples, Hobbies, Link to Socials, etc. A personal mission statement should also be included.

  2. Exit capstone requirements will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis by two Troy University Sport Management faculty members. Each student must meet or exceed professionalism expectations in order to pass.
  3. Students are not eligible to graduate if they do not successfully complete the exit capstone requirement.
  4. Students who do not meet the expectations of the Troy University Sport Management faculty members evaluating this requirement, will have an additional opportunity to resubmit for a passing grade. Students who do not receive a passing grade after the 2nd submission, must wait one semester before resubmitting the digital portfolio again.

Curriculum


All courses offer three semester hours of credit except SM 6625 , SM 6626  , SM 6627  , SM 6680 , SM 6681 , and SM 6682 .

Minimum Total Hours: 36


Students may choose from two concentrations: 1) Sport Management or 2) Collegiate Sport Management. In addition, the students may choose thesis or non-thesis options in each concentration.
