Graduate Certificate in Music Pedagogy (pending ACHE approval)


Students should consult the General Regulations section of the Graduate Catalog for additional information regarding Graduate School admission requirements, transfer credit, and other critical policies and procedures.


Students holding a graduate certificate in Music Pedagogy (Methods or Performance) will not lead to a teaching certificate or license. Should a student wish to continue in the Music Education masters programs (Traditional or Alt-A) programs, they would be required to follow standard admission standards/requirements for full admittance to the GTEP.

Certificate program students (who are not a part of the MSEd in Music Education program) may not qualify for federal student loans.

Admission Requirements


Applicants pursuing the Graduate Certificate in Music Pedagogy (MM or EP) must be admitted to the Graduate School (see Graduate Admission requirements). 

Option 1: Special Admission Non-Degree Matriculates

Option 2: Admission for Current Students

Student must be admitted to the Graduate School and the M.S. Ed in Music Education program at Troy University. See Graduate Admission and the M.S. Ed in Music Education program requirements.

Option 3: Admission for Post-Master’s Students

Students who have graduated from a master’s degree program at Troy University or another accredited university may be admitted to the certificate program. See Post Master’s Admission and Certificate Admission requirements in the Graduate Catalog.

Certificate Requirements


Admitted Music Pedagogy students may qualify for a certificate by completing the four required courses and maintaining an overall 3.0 GPA or better in order to meet the certificate requirements.

Advisement


The Music Education Graduate Coordinator/Advisor (MEGCA) will advise all students in the certificate program.

Certificate Assessment-Exit Requirement


All students nearing completion of their certificate will be required to complete and submit an exit analysis to the MEGCA.

Guideline/Procedures for Obtaining Certificate


Students who wish to be issued a certificate upon completion of the required coursework must submit the following: 

  1. Complete Certificate Intent, including satisfactory exit analysis submission.
  2. Copy of transcript

 

Internal processing for certificates:

  • The MEGCA collects and sends completed document to the registrar for processing of the certificate. Additional copies will be filed in the School of Music office.

Curriculum Requirements


Choose one of the following tracks: Music Pedagogy (Methods and Materials) or Music Pedagogy (Ensemble Performance)

Music Pedagogy - Methods and Materials (12 SH)


Program Objectives


Upon completion of the Music Pedagogy (Methods and Materials) certificate, students should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  1. Make meaningful theory to practice classroom applications utilizing best practices in music methods pedagogy for K-12 populations.
  2. Develop ways to apply best practices in music pedagogy to include global music, special populations, and other recognized specialty methods areas (such as Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, among others).

* Courses will initially be taught as Specialized Studies but will become approved courses, should enrollment warrant.

Music Pedagogy - Ensemble Performance (12 SH)


Program Objectives


Upon completion of the Music Pedagogy (Ensemble Performance) certificate, students should be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  1. Make meaningful theory to practice classroom applications utilizing best practices in music methods pedagogy for beginning and advanced performance ensembles.
  2. Develop ways to apply best practices in music pedagogy to rehearsal techniques and implementation of methods and materials for beginning/advanced ensembles.
